The SONDERHOFF FERMAPOR CC sealing is based on polyurethane and has a predominantly closed-cell foam structure which, when compressed, seals the components perfectly against water. It is particularly water repellent even under cold water conditions (up to 1 °C) and retains its sealing properties.
SONDERHOFF FERMAPOR CC material systems are addition cross-linking 2-component systems for the manufacture of soft polyurethane foams. The main elements of the A component are polyfunctional alcohols, the polyols. The B component consists of the aromatic MDI isocyanate and its derivatives. When component A is mixed with component B, a chemical reaction starts that, together with the developed FIP-CC process, leads to the formation of a predominantly closed-cell polyurethane soft foam sealing. It combines the high-water resistance of the silicone world with the attractive material costs of the polyurethane world.
Low water absorption even for damaged surfaces
SONDERHOFF FERMAPOR CC with its smooth, slightly shiny surface gives an optically high-quality appearance. Its foam structure has very fine cells, is impermeable and extremely uniform. Even if the surface should become damaged during application, practical trials and laboratory tests have shown that there is only a marginal change in water absorption.
Ice water resistant at water temperatures up to 1 °C
The SONDERHOFF FERMAPOR CC seal made of polyurethane is weatherproof and also ice water-resistant. It is particularly water repellent even under cold water conditions (up to 1 °C) and retains its sealing properties. With 24 hours ice-water storage (1 °C) of a 40% compressed foam seal, the volume increase caused by the water absorption is only ~1 %.
The factors low water affinity of the raw materials used, the very fine cell structure and the closed cell structure have a significant positive influence on the low water absorption of the closed-cell (CC) foam seal. Due to the capillary depression phenomenon, the very fine cell structure of the hydrophobically adjusted CC foam seal offers the advantage that water from very small cells is pushed out to a greater extent than from the capillaries of a coarse cell structure.
Usual processing conditions - typical polyurethane
As soon as the foam has completely hardened, it can be used for applications with high sealing and quality requirements. The exact hardening time is dependent on external factors such as temperature, humidity, and sealing dimension and it is also evaluated specifically for the sealed part. In contrast to comparable mixed-cell seals, the closed-cell foam seal requires less compression with the same sealing performance. The robust, mounting-resistant surface of the CC foam seal withstands possible mechanical stresses in the parts’ handling.
The operating temperature range lies between -40° to +80°C, and in the short term even up to +160°C dependent on the test conditions and is tested under real conditions appropriate to the application.
